James A. Cherof joined the law firm in 1980 as a corporate and commercial litigator and became a shareholder in 1984. Mr. Cherof concentrates his practice in the areas of local government law, land-use and special assessment litigation, and labor and employment law.
Mr. Cherof limits his labor practice solely to the representation of management. He currently serves as special labor counsel for both public and private sector clients. He has twenty-two years of experience as lead negotiator in the collective bargaining process for many public sector clients and is available to provide both leadership and legal counsel for the successful negotiation and implementation of collective bargaining agreements on behalf of management.
Mr. Cherof is recognized for his efforts in the training management personnel on the legal ramifications of employment discipline, suspension and termination; workplace discrimination; employee benefits; and application of the Fair Labor Standards Act. He counsels numerous law enforcement agencies in the specialized area of disciplinary action involving law enforcement personnel. He is available to appear before the Florida Public Employees Relations Commission on matters including unit representation/clarification and the prosecution and defense of unfair labor practice charges, and to assist in the defense of charges of discrimination before local, state, and federal regulatory/investigatory agencies.
Mr. Cherof has been the City Attorney for the City of Boynton Beach, Florida since 1990, the Town Attorney for the Town of Lauderdale By the Sea, Florida from 1994-2008, and Special Labor Counsel for the Village of North Palm Beach since 1997. He has received the highest (AV) rating from Martindale-Hubbell, a nationally recognized rating service for attorneys and has been designated an elite attorney by Florida Trend Magazine.
